What is a back-rank mate?
A back-rank mate happens when a rook or queen checks a king on its first rank and the king's own pawns block every escape. It's the most common mating pattern below 1800, both delivered and suffered.
These puzzles train both sides of it: seeing when the enemy back rank is weak, and the deflections and decoys that pull away its last defender.
Common mistake
Forgetting your own back rank. Give your king a flight square (h3/h6) when the heavy pieces leave.
How to spot it
Is the enemy king on its back rank with pawns still on f7/g7/h7 (or f2/g2/h2)?
Count the defenders of the back rank. If there is only one, attack it, deflect it or overload it.
Check whether a sacrifice on the back rank forces a recapture that leaves it undefended.
