What is a discovered attack?
A discovered attack happens when you move a piece out of the way and reveal an attack by the piece behind it. The moving piece is free to make its own threat at the same time.
That double threat is why discoveries are so strong: the opponent has to deal with two attacks from one move. A discovered check is the most powerful version.
Common mistake
Moving the blocker to a quiet square. Make the moving piece threaten something too.
How to spot it
Find your long-range pieces (rook, bishop, queen) that are blocked by one of your own pieces.
If the blocker moves with a threat or a capture, the opponent faces two problems at once.
Discovered checks let the moving piece go anywhere, even onto an attacked square.
