What is a double check?
A double check comes from a discovered attack where both the moving piece and the revealed piece give check. Nothing can block two checks or capture two pieces, so the king must move.
That makes double checks the most forcing move in chess, and many of the prettiest mates use one.
Common mistake
Settling for a single discovered check when a double check was available.
How to spot it
Look for a discovered check where the moving piece also gives check.
Since only king moves are legal, count the king's squares. Zero means mate.
The moving piece can land on a defended square. It can't be taken during a double check.
