What is a en passant?

En passant lets a pawn capture an enemy pawn that just moved two squares past it, as if it had moved one. It's only available on the very next move, which is why it gets forgotten.

These puzzles use real games where en passant is the key move, sometimes opening a line, sometimes delivering mate.

Common mistake

Forgetting it exists. It's always a candidate move right after a two-square push.

How to spot it

01

Did the opponent's last move push a pawn two squares next to one of yours?

02

En passant can open a file or diagonal, not just win a pawn.

03

It can also be the only move that escapes check.
