What is a rook endgame?
Rook endgames are the most common endgame type, and they're full of tactics: skewers along ranks, cutting off the king, and checks from behind.
These puzzles are taken from real rook endings, so they mix tactics with the technique that converts or saves them.
Common mistake
Passive rook defence. An active rook saves a lot of positions.
How to spot it
Rooks belong behind passed pawns, yours or the opponent's.
Look for skewers when the enemy king and rook share a rank or file.
Cutting the enemy king off by a file is often worth more than a pawn.
